Duty charged on low value gift....?

I won a competition on a podcast I listen to. The prize is a camera strap. The value of the strap is 42USD (about £32).

I got a card through the door from Royal Mail saying there was a duty of £15.90 to be paid before it can be delivered.

I thought there was no duty on gifts under the value of £135.

What can I do?

Any parcel assessed as being liable for Customs charges will incur a Royal Mail handling fee of £8. Any goods imported into the UK over the value of £15 are liable for import VAT. So 20% VAT on £32 + £8 fee sounds about right. Chances are on the CN22 customs form gift was not ticked and it has been treated as a purchase.
